If most people were asked what their goal in life was, many would say that they want to leave the world better than it was. Unfortunately, this goal is often a trite one-liner more than an actual ambition. People will give lip service to the idea of doing good, but the cares of life can be too much and they will not make the time or the effort to reach that goal. On the other hand, there are those who truly are philanthropists, who actually exert effort to change the world. Thor Halvorrsen is among these inspiring and self-sacrificial individuals.
He Founded The Oslo Freedom Forum
The Oslo Freedom Forum is a human rights organization. They emphasize human value and virtue, arguing that people have intrinsic worth. The man living in a hole on the other side of the world with no friends and no purpose in life has value. Their key emphasis is the idea that despite the nation or race of an individual, she will still be worth something and deserves basic human rights. That is why many of their speakers will be men and women from different nations across the world to tell of their struggles and the oppression.
Lucent Technologies And Slave Labor
When a westerner thinks of slavery, she will likely think of the atrocities that occurred during the early years of the United States. She may be thankful that it is over. But the truth is that it is not over. It may be occurring on American soil, but it is certainly not over. Halvorrsen launched a campaign at Lucent Technologies to combat the atrocity of slavery abroad. His campaign pressured China to certify that their products had not been manufactured by slave laborers. This would seriously mitigate the financial prosperity of slavery.
Halvorrsen is a true philanthropist and somebody who many across the world admire. He is a member of a persecuted family, as he currently has relatives who are political prisoners in Venezuela. Both of his parents were murdered as political prisoners. Rather than being bitter, he lives to bring good into the world.
